Would I be entitled for the £250.00 per night cash benefit? - Examples:
1. I have recently spent a couple of nights in an NHS hospital following an emergency admission.
NO – The NHS cash benefit is not payable following emergency admissions.
2. I saw a private consultant through the Police Healthcare Scheme (PHS) and was subsequently referred for surgery. The NHS could fit me in for this surgery in 7 weeks time.
YES – The PHS would authorise treatment to be arranged privately should the NHS waiting list be longer than 6 weeks, so you would be entitled to the cash benefit should you chose to wait instead. **
** If the NHS can treat you within 6 weeks, the PHS would not cover the treatment privately and subsequently the NHS cash benefit would not apply.
3. I waited longer than 6 weeks for my surgery through the NHS but I didn’t stay overnight.
NO – The cash benefit is only payable for 1 night stay or longer.
4. I recently had an overnight stay in a NHS hospital following orthodontic surgery.
NO – If your NHS stay is due to a procedure the PHS would not cover privately, the cash benefit would not be payable.
5. I stayed in an NHS Hospital for 2 months following an operation, which I waited over 6 weeks to receive and would have been covered privately.
The £250.00 is payable up to a maximum of 21 nights per financial year.
6. I had a stay in a NHS hospital for which I claimed the cash benefit. I then had another stay a few months later.
Provided you have waited the necessary 6 weeks before the second admission, you would be able to claim the NHS benefit again up to the 21 night maximum.
